Opinion polls show majority of Poles against missile defence shield

New research by the CBOS opinion poll centre has shown that 54% of Poles are against the construction of a missile defence shield in Poland.
This is however an improvement on the previous 60% of opponents. 32% support the shield. 47% believe that the shield should entail the USA's support in the modernization of the Polish armed forces. 37% say that Poland should not agree to the shield at all.
56% believe that the shield would increase Poland's vulnerability to attacks by Islamic fundamentalists and 59% - that it will also increase the possibility of missile attacks from other countries, for instance Russia.
45% of respondents said that Russia's objection to the shield was unfounded and 61% refused Moscow the right to monitor if the shield was constructed in Poland. 31% agreed that Moscow was right to object.
