Prague: Permanent Petitionary Stand

30.6.2008 - No to Bases initiative

Since Tuesday 17th of June there is a permanent petitionary stand of the No to Bases initiative on the Wenceslav Square („near the Horse“) in Prague.

Up to now, the nonstop stand has already been in service for 293 hours. It addresses thousands of citizens and proves in a local “Wenceslav's referendum” that nearly two thirds of public oppose the plan to build an American military radar base in the Czech republic.

So far, the permanent stand has gained another 3 500 signatures on the petition demanding referendum. It also provides valuable feedback from the citizens to our initiative. And last but not least, it is an effective instrument against the deafness of Czech government rejecting to listen to its voters.

The establishment does not know how to cope with the stand on the Wenceslav's Square. Unlike Greenpeace, we simply cannot be expelled from this frequented place. So we call upon you to help us maintain the nonstop stand as long as possible.

The stand is organized on a daily basis in separate periods from 0,00 – 6,00, 6,00 – 15,00 and 15,00 – 24,00. However it is possible to choose own timing according to one's occasions. The serving person on the stand enables people to sign the petition, vote in the Wenceslav's referendum, take the leaflets, stickers and/or other materials.

Information is also given about the forthcoming demonstration against the planned arrival of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who is supposed to sign the treaty on radar on 8th of July.
