Report from the Demonstration 5.4.2009
19.4.2009 - The No Bases Initiative
On Sunday 5th of April, the No Bases Initiative organized a demonstration against the proposed US missile defense radar base to be built in the Czech republic. Approximately one thousand people gathered on the Wenceslav Square in Prague to protest while the new American president Obama stayed in the capital along with prominent European politicians.
The speeches were delivered by both spokespersons of the Initiative as well as by many guests, including: Jan Neoral, the mayor of Trokavec village and representative of the Mayors' League Against the Radar, popular director Zdeněk Troška, agents of parliamentary opposition against radar or philosopher Prof. Erazim Kohák, who for a long time lived and lectured in the United States.
Then, a march followed to the venue of the US-EU summit at the Prague Congress Centre. However, we used an alternative route that was eventually allowed by the timorous Prague City Hall.
