Protest during Bush's visit

Press release: Czechs will protest during Bush's visit to Prague

Prague, Czech Republic. April 24, 2007

Civic initiative “No to the Bases” began organizing protest demonstration that will take place during President Bush’s visit to Prague at the beginning of June. The initiative is opposing the US plan to install a military base in the Czech Republic.

“We are having a demonstration on April 26 on Wenceslas square in Prague where people from all across the country will come, so we will invite them all to return to Prague two weeks later,” said Jan Tamáš, the initiative spokesperson. “We are expecting thousands of people to come in April, so probably the same number will come in June 4-5, when Mr. Bush will be here,” he added. “We would also like to invite all those Europeans, who oppose this US plan to come to Prague to protest.”

The exact date of the demonstration has not yet been stated, but it is expected to be the day of president Bush’s arrival in Prague. Bush is expected to arrive in Prague on June 4. He is to stop over in the Czech Republic within a series of visits to several countries.

The initiative “No to the Bases” organized several demonstrations since its formation in July last year. During the last demonstration on January 29 thousands of people marched from the city center to the US embassy and then to the seat of the Czech government.

The initiative currently unites nearly 50 Czech and international organizations opposing the US plan to establish a new military base in the Czech Republic. It calls for a national referendum on this issue. Its website address is www.NeZakladnam.cz.
